General Requirements for New Applicants

To qualify for membership, applicants must:

Graduate from a Recognized Massage Therapy School

Must complete a minimum 2,200-hour curriculum-based program.

Pass the MTAS Member Qualifying Examination (MQE)

  • Includes written and practical exams
  • Covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, assessment, treatment techniques, and ethics

Submit Required Documentation

  • Criminal Record Check
(within 6 months, including vulnerable sector search)
  • CPR Level C & Standard First Aid Certification
  • Proof of liability insurance
($2 million minimum coverage)

Pay Membership Fees

  • Practicing Membership:
$430 per year
  • Non-Practicing Membership:
$215 per year

Educational Institutions

Applicants must complete their training at a recognized massage therapy institution that meets the 2,200-hour education requirement. MTAS does not accept experience in place of formal education. The following elements are required in an eligible program:

Courses in anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, and clinical assessment
Hands-on training in massage techniques and therapeutic applications
Ethics and professional standards education
Clinical practicum hours

Inter-Jurisdictional Practice Competency and Prior Learning Assessment (IJ PC/PI)

Massage therapists trained in other provinces or countries may be eligible for membership through the Inter-Jurisdictional Practice Competency and Prior Learning Assessment (IJ PC/PI) process.

Massage Therapists from Regulated Provinces

  • If in good standing with a College of Massage Therapy in a regulated province, no MQE is required.
  • Must submit a Letter of Good Standing and proof of certification.

Massage Therapists from Unregulated Provinces

  • Must meet the 2,200-hour education requirement.
  • Must write and pass the MTAS MQE.

Internationally Trained Massage Therapists

  • Must undergo a credential review process to determine equivalency.
  • A $50 + GST fee applies for credential evaluation.
  • If training is deemed insufficient, additional coursework or examinations may be required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take the MTAS exam if I am already an RMT in another province?

If you are from a regulated province and in good standing, you are not required to take the exam. Instead, you must submit a Letter of Good Standing and proof of liability insurance.

How long does the application process take?

The full application process, including document review and scheduling the MQE, takes approximately 2-4 weeks.

What if my education does not meet the 2,200-hour requirement?

Applicants may be required to complete additional coursework, obtain further clinical experience, or pass competency assessments.

Can I work as a massage therapist while waiting for membership approval?

No, you cannot practice as a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in Saskatchewan without MTAS approval and liability insurance.
